Turmeric is an incredibly healthy spice that has been enjoyed for centuries throughout Asia. It is also typically used by natural healers to treat health problems, including many that affect the brain. But despite turmeric's reputation as a brain-booster, very little is known about the effects, if any, of fermented turmeric on a person's memory and other vital cognitive functions. To that end, a group of researchers from Korea studied the effects of fermented turmeric powder on mice with drug-induced memory impairment, as well as on rat brain tumor cells. Their findings indicated that fermented turmeric may be a useful material for preventing memory impairment.

Fermented turmeric for memory impairment

To make fermented turmeric, the team fermented turmeric powder with five percent Lactobacillus plantarum K154 containing two percent yeast extract at 30 degrees Celsius for 72 hours. The researchers studied the effects of fermented turmeric powder on both C6 rat glioma cells and on live mice. Glioma is a type of brain tumor that develops from glial cells, which support and protect brain cells. They first induced oxidative stress, which can cause cell death, in the C6 rat glioma cells. Following that, they then treated the cells with fermented turmeric powder. For the other experiment, the team divided mice into six groups of eight. One group served as the control, one was given the motion sickness prescription drug scopolamine to induce memory impairment while three were given scopolamine and treated with different doses of fermented turmeric powder. The final group received scopolamine as well but was treated with donepezil, a drug used to treat confusion in people with Alzheimer's disease. All six groups of mice then went through the step-through passive avoidance test and the Morris water maze test to assess their memory function. The results of the first experiment revealed that fermented turmeric powder effectively prevented cell death in C6 rat glioma cells that were under oxidative stress. This confirmed that fermented turmeric powder has protective effects against oxidative stress, which has been linked to memory deficits in humans. Meanwhile, the results of the second experiment showed that mice treated with fermented turmeric did better in both tests than mice that weren't treated with fermented turmeric. The results also showed that the fermented turmeric powder was just as effective as donepezil at improving memory function. Overall, the results showed that fermented turmeric prevented oxidative stress from causing cell death. It also improved memory function just as effectively as a memory-enhancing drug. Therefore, the study provides evidence that fermented turmeric can help address memory impairment in humans, much like fresh turmeric.

How to make a fermented turmeric tonic

Want to boost brain health? Drink this refreshing turmeric tonic as part of your regular diet. You can add a bit of ginger as well for extra protection against age-related brain conditions. Ingredients:
  • 5 tamarind pods
  • 2 lemons, juiced
  • 1 5-inch turmeric root
  • 8 cups filtered water
  • 1/2 cup raw honey
Preparation:
  1. Peel the turmeric root and cut it into chunks.
  2. Bring 4 cups of water to a boil and add the turmeric chunks. Boil for about 20 minutes or until the water takes on a bright golden color.
  3. Meanwhile, crack open the tamarind pods and remove the fruits. Discard the pods. Bring another pot of water to a boil. Reduce heat and add the fruits. Simmer until the seeds come out of the fruit. Let cool.
  4. Once cool, pour the mixture through a strainer. You should have a paste with a jam-like texture.
  5. When the turmeric is done boiling, pour in the remaining 4 cups of water to lower the temperature.
  6. Transfer to a blender. Blend until smooth, then add the tamarind paste, lemon juice and honey. Blend it again.
  7. Pour the blended tonic into glass jars, leaving about an inch of headspace. Leave them to ferment for 48 hours at room temperature. Refrigerate when done fermenting.
It turns out, the only thing better than turmeric when it comes to brain health is fermented turmeric. Improve brain health and keep age-related brain diseases at bay by trying the fermented turmeric tonic recipe above or by incorporating fresh turmeric into your diet.
