Clinics operated by "queer-affirming" therapist accused of bypassing parental consent, fast-tracking minors into gender transition
- Clinics in Kansas and Wyoming, operated by self-described "queer-affirming" therapist LP Curtis-Baker, are providing puberty blockers and gender surgery referrals to minors as young as 12, often through brief Zoom evaluations and without parental consent.
- The clinics, under the name Curtis-Baker Therapeutic Services (CBTS), follow World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) standards for issuing mental health assessments and transition-related referrals, even across state lines.
- Advocacy group Gays Against Groomers accuses CBTS of replacing clinical care with activism, rooted in intersectional feminism and anti-traditional values and claims the practice systematizes and financially incentivizes youth gender transitions.
- On Jan. 28, President Trump signed an EO banning the use of WPATH guidance in federal policy, labeling it "junk science" and directing agencies to rescind all policies tied to it, to stop what he calls "chemical and surgical mutilation" of children.
- Despite the federal ban, CBTS continues using WPATH guidelines, highlighting the deep national divide over gender ideology in medicine and the challenges of enforcing federal policy at the clinic level.
Clinics in Kansas and Wyoming run by a self-described "queer-affirming" therapist are drawing sharp criticism for allegedly
providing recommendation letters for puberty blockers, hormone therapy and even gender-related surgeries to children as young as 12, often via brief remote sessions and without parental consent.
The clinics, operated under the name Curtis-Baker Therapeutic Services (CBTS) and founded by licensed clinical social worker LP Curtis-Baker (formerly Lindsey Curtis-Baker), have become a national flashpoint in the debate over youth gender care. Their approach, which includes Zoom-based evaluations for out-of-state minors, reportedly offers mental health assessments and referral letters in line with World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) standards – letters often required to begin medical or surgical transition, even for minors.
However, critics claimed this model bypasses traditional oversight and parental involvement.
According to the advocacy group
Gays Against Groomers, which describes itself as "fighting to end the war on children from inside the community," these practices represent a disturbing trend: "a fully embedded ideological operation, legitimized by licensing boards, funded by insurance (including Medicaid) and targeting vulnerable youth across state lines."
Gays Against Groomers alleges that CBTS openly markets its services to minors nationwide, regardless of geographic location, and that their therapeutic framework is "rooted in intersectional feminism and the rejection of traditional moral or religious worldviews." The group argues that this is not
neutral mental health care but "ideological indoctrination with a clinical license."
"What's especially troubling is how these practices bypass traditional safeguards like parental consent. By framing emotional struggles as confirmation of gender identity, therapists like those at CBTS act as gate-openers rather than gatekeepers, fast-tracking vulnerable youth into lifelong medicalization," Gays Against Groomers explained. "And because this process is often funded through Medicaid or accepted insurance plans, it becomes systematized, normalized, and financially incentivized."
"The language used – "affirming," "sex-positive," "anti-oppression" – is not neutral," Gays against Groomers noted. "It is the language of social justice, not psychology. These therapists are not simply offering support; they are embedding activism into the very foundation of clinical care." (Related:

CBTS continues gender transitions for minors using "junk science" standards
The concerns echo broader national tensions over the role of gender ideology in medicine.
On Jan. 28, President Donald Trump issued an executive order calling on
all federal agencies to cease reliance on WPATH guidance. The order characterized the organization's standards as "junk science" and accused them of enabling "chemical and surgical mutilation" of children under the guise of healthcare.
But despite the executive order, the CBTS still uses WPATH guidelines for gender transition.
